What we do
Every minute, a woman dies in pregnancy or childbirth...
...the vast majority of maternal deaths could be prevented

About our work
We want to see a reduction in unacceptably high maternal and child mortality/morbidity rates in countries where there is extreme poverty. We want to alleviate suffering by capacity building and empowering staff and civil society to effect systemic change from villages to hospitals.
We improve the quality of care:
- during pregnancy and childbirth
- for women
- for the newborn infant
- for children
For every newborn baby who dies, another 20 suffer birth injury

We achieve better healthcare by strengthening health systems via the following methods:
- work with local health workers to find the best ways of improving healthcare
- train health workers in the management of emergency healthcare
- train doctors, nurses, midwives, traditional birth attendants and village health workers
- encourage education programmes to provide in-country instructors thereby
achieving a sustainable outcome to the areas where we work
In The Gambia there are approximately 5 trained midwives for every 1,000 births

- develop and distribute free, up-to-date and evidence-based medical teaching materials
- advocate for improvement with governments to renovate hospitals, provide medical equipment, drugs and supplies for managing emergencies
- international child protection work
