MCAI (Maternal and Childhealth Advocacy International) is sending 100 lifesaving resuscitation masks to The Gambia where they will be used to help revive new-born babies and children. The masks will be given to healthcare workers as part of a project to improve healthcare for pregnant women, new-born babies and children in the upper river region of The Gambia. The project trains nurses, doctors, midwives and community health workers how to give better emergency care. MCAI has already trained 666 healthcare workers in The Gambia.
Currently 20% of neonatal deaths in The Gambia are caused by asphyxia and so the masks will be of great value to the newly trained healthcare workers
